Measure the seating area, not just the room
You do not need a floor plan. A tape measure and a few removable markers will do. If you use tape, make sure it is suitable for your floor finish.
- Leave the furniture where you use it. Include the armchair you pull forward to watch a film, not only the sofa and coffee table.
- Mark the proposed rug corners. Let the outline extend past the sides of the sofa if the space allows. Check that chairs can sit comfortably on the same surface rather than balancing on an edge.
- Walk through the room. Open doors, move the coffee table and try the route to the next room. A larger rug is not automatically better if its edge lands in an awkward spot.
- Measure the outline in both directions. Write the measurements down in feet and inches. Compare them with the selected product variant, not the size suggested by a styled photograph.
Choosing between two sizes
A compact sofa and coffee table
A format around 5 × 7 or 5 × 8 ft is worth marking out first. It may work for a compact seating area, but check the width of your sofa: a rug that ends well inside both arms can make the coffee table feel separate from the rest of the room. If that is what your outline shows, try the next size before deciding.
A sofa with a separate armchair
Mark both pieces of furniture into the same outline. A format around 6 × 9 or 8 × 10 ft may give you more room to connect them. What matters is whether the arrangement fits, not whether a size is described as a “living room rug.”
A sectional or an open-plan room
Measure the chaise as well as the main sofa. Try an outline that brings the seating together while leaving the route behind it clear. You can place all the furniture legs on the rug if the available space allows, or keep only the front legs on it. Neither arrangement is a reason to force a size that does not fit.
Similar size names can mean different measurements
This is an easy detail to miss when comparing rugs. An 8 × 10 ft MAVAL is not the same width as a 7 ft 9 in × 10 ft STEP. That difference matters if you are fitting the rug between a cabinet and a doorway.
- STEP and MARFI: mid-size options include 5 ft 3 in × 7 ft 6 in, 6 ft 7 in × 9 ft, and 7 ft 9 in × 10 ft.
- MAVAL: comparable options include 5 × 8 ft, 6 × 9 ft, and 8 × 10 ft.
- MERINO Beige: the model in our collection is 5 × 7 ft.
These are listed dimensions, not a promise of current stock. Check the size selector on the product page for availability. Runners and smaller accent sizes serve a different purpose; they will not give you the same seating-area coverage.
Three details to check before ordering
Door clearance. If a door opens over the rug, allow for the rug and any pad underneath. Pile height alone is not the total thickness. If clearance is tight and the full thickness is not listed, ask us before buying.
The floor underneath. If you use a rug pad, choose one suitable for your floor finish and follow its sizing instructions. Do not assume every rug backing will stay put on every floor.
Other uses. Under a dining table, repeat the outline test with chairs pulled out as someone would use them. A size that fits the table alone may leave chair legs catching the edge.
Try the measurements with a rug you like
For a quiet, light foundation, compare the exact formats of STEP Cream. For a patterned option, look at MAVAL Blue & Cream. If a 5 × 7 ft footprint fits your plan and you want a deeper pile, see MERINO Beige and read its material and care details.
Once the footprint works, the next decision is easier: choose a color that works with the sofa and floor you already have.
